| Marukyu proves it catches red fins on rivers as well as carp |

Glen Greasley was in the frame yet again this time at Lakeside in Ranskill, and his method I hear you ask, chopped worm over EFG130. Glen took third place overall with 34lb 14oz. Richard Bedder had to try just about everything he knows for a lake third at the Glebe in Leicestershire the other week. Well done Richard. I guess the answer is just keep trying until you find a method on the day that will work. The legend that is Andy May has joined up with Marukyu and has already had a win at Partridge lakes. Andy's winning method on the day was expander pellet soaked in Liquid Krill (SFA 450) for five minutes and then a little water added before being pumped. Andy said: "They worked an absolute treat and as I say it definitely made a difference and to actually see it working when no one else could catch on them was such a confidence boost!" Phil Allton of Ted Carter fame sent a report in saying he managed to secure third place fishing with krilled expanders. I would love to tell you where this happened but Phil bless him must have been so excited by his achievement as he forgot to tell us. I wonder how much info we will get if he wins a match? Marukyu receives dozens of fantastic reports every week, and this was a fantastic one from Mark Poppleton, who has been quietly catching well at Viaduct fishery. We all know that meat normally isn't a great bait in the cold weather, however there is meat and there is Marukyu krilled meat. Meat soaked in SFA 450 is doing the damage for Mark. In his last three matches he has had two seconds and a third. Last Sunday it produced 112lbs on the pole, the highest pole weight of the year at Viaduct. Marukyu krill is the hot bait at most fisheries this winter – and pellets soaked in SFA 450 are doing the business everywhere. As for me I managed to sneak a cheeky little second place overall at Halesworth lakes on the Wissett road at Halesworth, Suffolk fishing krilled maggots for anything that swims basically. I was happily hitting carp on single or double krilled red maggot on a size 20 hook which amused other anglers on the lake when my 9 hollow elastic was being stretched to the max but at least it got me in the frame on what was an absolute awful day weather wise. And finally a great story from John Hall… So it's Sunday 5th of Feb 2012 and my alarm clock goes of at 6:45. I look out of the window and see at least six inches of snow covering everything. Great, I thought, no winter league today better go back sleep. After a few minutes I realised there's a place where water moves. I think it's called a river? A quick phone call revealed a match on the river at Sutton Bonnington on the River Soar. Shall I, shan't I? Why not - better than staying in all day. So off to my tackle shop to get my kit and when I got there it suddenly dawned on me 'I have no tackle at all to catch a roach! A quick flurry around the shop and with some 1lb line or 0.08 to the more technical people and a rummage through the 50p float box saw me set up. What about bait? I decided EFG130 and EFG100 as its 14ft deep - plus a few maggots. Down the motorway to junction 24 and half hour later I'm at my peg, number 48. It’s 14ft deep and gin clear. I mixed up 50/50 EFG130 and EFG100 and made 10 ‘babies heads’. Bosh bosh - I forgot how accurate I was from my county cricket days and nearly smashed the end of my pole with rock hard balls of ground bait. At the draw I was ripped when I turned up with loads of comments about carp fishing "you don't catch on JPz here John ha-ha" and "are you fishing pellet waggler and slapping you rig today" needless to say I hadn't fished a river in 7 years… At the end of the match and I had enjoyed catching a few roach on pinkie over Marukyu groundbait. Much to my surprise and more surprise to the river boys I finished second with 7lb 4oz of quality red fins. Pete Jeyes who's a legendary roach angler - only just best me with 8lb! |

I would like to start this week with two different accounts of the same match at the Glebe and leave you guys to work out which one is true. The first version (unedited) is from Richard 'The Margin Monsters' Bedders version. Here goes: “I have been drawing rubbish lately, so at the draw I decided to try drawing with my right hand. “Well what a change! Peg 86 - the little girls peg – comes out. It’s been three years since I last drew this peg. “Although it had not produced a winner in the last 5 weeks, I felt confident. “Getting to my peg, I set up my feeder rod and two pole lines. “I started on a micro feeder with EFG 130 and popped up bread, 10 minutes later a drop back bite, and a nice 6lb carp in the net. “At least i haven’t blanked I say to myself. I had a few liners more liners, then Roy Marlow on the next peg catches two in quick succession. “I decided to cast further along the bank towards his peg, and that tactic resulted in three more carp. “I started getting liners again, so tried a smaller piece of bread, bingo had a nice run of fish. “Then disaster - Andy Willams on peg 89 loses the top 6 off his pole, which after a few minutes ends up in my peg right where I am catching. “After he and another person went scrambling through the far bank bushes, Andy then gets his pole back, then plays his carp, then promptly loses it, right where I was catching. “The next two hours all I could get were liners. “And in the last 10 mins I tried double JPZ on a long hair and caught two more carp. I weighed in 61lb 8oz for a lake win. Second in the lake was 38lb.” And now for the same story told from the next peg: Roy Marlow version (unedited): “Richard is now known as ‘End peg Richard’ as he draws more end pegs than anyone else on earth. “What he probably hasn't told you is that I drew next to him. Richard was on Peg 86 (the little girls peg) me on 87, no one on 88 and Andy Williams on 89. “I am not saying that random casting doesn't work especially in the winter but when Richard’s feeder lands between 87 and 89 I think it is taking the Mickey just a bit. “The excuse was the very strong wind. It should be pointed out that a 3 mph wind is not classed as a strong wind. “He also failed to mention his now common walkabouts where he visits the far bank to retrieve his feeder. “Now I am not saying it was solid, but several times a fish was on when he just reeled in. “To be fair only a couple of carp rolled in his swim, the rest were frightened to because they would have lost their place and wouldn't have been able to get back to the bottom. “Andy Williams fish just tried to join all his mates in Richard’s peg. It had to barge its way through the shoal there were that many there.” I do love it you would never guess that these two anglers are actually freinds would you? Which ever version of events is true it makes for some good reading and all fair in love and war and all that. Richard does seem to be on a bit of a roll at the moment getting a second overall at Higham Lane fisheries. And so on to other news… Marukyu pro team member Glen Greasly had two wins from four visits to Atherley just before Christmas last year so he thought he would venture back - but only managed a third place this time. What’s going on Glen? I can’t take the mickey too much as he then went on to win again at Smithies Res in 50mph winds on the pole, very well done Glen. Steve Lane from the Boston area in Lincolnshire has joined the field testing team - welcome aboard. Steve has shown already why Roy Marlow has faith in him and invited him to join the team with a couple of back-to-back wins at Westwood lakes. I wont give away his secrets just yet as he is new but rest assured it wont be long before the beans get spilled. As for me well I’ve had a good little run at Burgh Apton fishery near Norwich with a win and second in my last two matches. Time to give away my secret of how so many carp are falling to my feeder tactics at this time of year (29 two weeks ago and 24 this week). I am using a small Kamasan black cap feeder (holes in this feeder are just the right size for the feed I’m using) a 12 inch 0.12 hooklength to a Kamasan B911 hook size 18. Bait in the feeder is two thirds maggot and one third 3mm Nori pellets and hook bait is double red maggots. The feeding is the key here although it’s winter and feed needs to be kept down to a minimum if you believe most of the articals written. I actually cast every 4 to 6 mins depending on how many bites or liners I maybe getting and on this particular venue it seems to work rather well for me so why not give it a try next time your out it may just work for you too. |

4th January 2012
Well its 2012 already and I would like to start the New Year by saying a big thank you to everyone at Marukyu. There are a few reasons for this - firstly for letting me become part of what has to be one of the best set ups in modern day fishing, and secondly for the bait which is in no small part the reason that I enjoyed 17 match wins last year - a great return in most anglers books! And thirdly for all the new friends I have made both within and through Marukyu. And so on to my report! Martin Freeman visited Button Hole at Wisbech to fish a qualifying match for a £1000 final in August. Drawing peg 4 Martin was quickly into his stride catching steadily on the feeder using EFG 130 and SFA 430 to record a match win with 98lbs. Martin also won a Decoy open last week using the same method. Following these successes Martin got an invite to fish for a four man team at Alders Farm drawing what he was told to be an average peg. He fished 4 and 6mm expander pellet on the pole line for the first 2.5hrs and struggled for about 8lbs until he started dipping his hookbait expander in SFA 430 before shipping out every time which seemed to instantly show results and put a total of 84lb in the net for third on the lake. The Angling Times must have heard about Martins antics as they have asked him to do a feature! Ben Emery fished three matches over the Christmas period and they all went extremely well. The first match was at Willinghurst, Surrey on the 28th Dec, Drawing peg 3 on New Lake which is a good draw at the moment. Ben fished the bomb both onto the bar and in the deeper water for a total of seven carp and a weight of 41lb and a lake win. Hookbait was an 8mm pellet with a cone with 3mm and 1mm Nori pellets. The next match Ben fished was at Furnace Lakes, Rudgewick, Surrey. This was a silverfish only match. Ben drew peg 2 which is an ok draw but nothing special. A positive approach of two largish balls of EFG at the start followed up by several smaller one throughout the match brought in a weight of 17lbs which was enough for third place overall. Ben’s third and final match saw him back at Willinghurst on the 30th for yet another lake win with five carp for a total weight of 28lb. Ben’s approach this time was long pole to some rushes both feeding and using krilled expanders as bait. Boz Phillips fished a couple of matches over the festive period and here’s how they panned out. First match was at Whiteacres - a Winter League silverfish only affair, on the match lake. He drew peg 30 which is not a bad section peg. Boz decided to fish two lines, one at 5mtrs for roach and perch and one at 11 metres for skimmers. Feeding two balls of EFG130 on the 5mtr line with a few casters in and loose fed casters over the top. At 11mtrs he fed four balls of EFG130 with casters and chopped worm. Starting on the short line catching a few roach from the off. It was a little slow but the lads either side could not get a bite so Boz carried on for about an hour until it dried up completely when a switch to the 11 mtr line with Krilled maggot on the hook. That saw a roach first put in followed by skimmers and roach slowly but surely until the end of the match - even catching three small carp which had to be slipped back. The other end of the section fished a little better and with 18lb to beat the lads either side weighed in 8lb and 12lb. Boz put 24lb on the scales for a section win and 6th overall. The next match was fished at Nance lakes St Ives. Boz drew a peg with a nice feeder chuck to an island so decided to fish straight lead with either a pellet cone with EFG 131 and hair rigged pellet or some little PVA mesh bags with dry EFG 131 and 3mm protein pellets and just hooking the bag. First cast to the island with a PVA bag saw a carp of about 4lb followed by a few skimmers and then some more carp and a rather impressive winning weight of 77lbs - with second place weighing in 40lbs and third place 36lbs. Boz secret PVA bag mix is as follows: riddling off the larger particles in the groundbait EFG131 and adding some small pellets to this when the bag dissolves the dry groundbait explodes from the bag leaving your hair rigged bait in a small pile of particles and the carp seem to be drawn straight to it. Roy Marlow also tells me that Jamie Masson, Andy Kinder and Brian Clark have been doing the business with fishery pellets soaked in SFA 450. Until next time Tight lines to everyone had a happy 2012 |

| Gordon continues his winning streak |

12th December 2011
Gordon 'the tonman' Parker notched up yet another win at Kinsland Reservoir in Cambridgeshire. Let’s spill the beans on how this was achieved. Gordon fed SDP 2003 [3mm protein pellets] soaked in SFA 410 (liquid krill), with a very small amount of corn with a banded 6mm protein pellet as hook bait in the main and corn as a change bait, to record an all carp net of 78lb 8oz. On the latest round of the Glebe Winter League James Adcock pulled out peg 71 in the middle of pool 4 - a nice area to draw with the peg having form from the previous week. He started off on a little cage feeder loaded with EFG130 and a single red JPz pellet cast tight to the far bank but despite several indications didn't get a proper bite - so had to drop short of the far bank into the deeper water where he had three fish in quick succession to get himself up and running. He then switched to the long pole line (16m) where James had fed initially with a pot of micro pellets soaked in SFA430 (liquid Sanagi) and over this line he fed 6mm pellets via catapult. Fishing a 6mm JPz over the top he started to catch small carp with the fish responding well. A move to the 7m pole line later on in the match which had been fed with casters and micropellets both glugged with SFA430 resulted in three bonus carp and a two big skimmers on three krilled maggots. He finished the match with 111lb for a lake win and best weight overall on the day. Francis O’Reilly managed to bag himself another win locally fishing the Method. Francis’s mix was 80% EFG131, 15% EFG100 and 5% of krill powder (SFA400), hook bait on this occasion was hair rigged JPz. Apparently John Hall had showed Francis how he goes about hair rigging JPz and as you can see it obviously works. Maybe we might be able to get John to share this info with us sometime? Francis followed this up with another win this time at Rosemary Wood Fishery near Magull on the island pool. This young man is doing his growing reputation no harm at all at the moment. Talking about John he has managed a win and a second on consecutive matches at Makin’s using as he now calls them 'little red devils' - JPz to you and me. Gren Greasly, who seems to win most things locally, is sitting in second place overall after five rounds of the Smithies Winter League. What’s happening Glen? Are you human like the rest of us? Martyn Freeman is a new field tester who has just been taken on by the powers to be. Welcome aboard mate. Martyn has been out twice since joining up and won his section both times from difficult draws at Decoy Lakes in Cambs. I know this venue and the sort of quality angler it can attract so section wins here are no easy feat. Hopefully over the coming weeks the draw bag will be a little kinder and some proper brown envelopes will be on there way. Ben Emery's reputation continues to grow with another win under his belt from the New Lake at Ockley, Surrey. Ben had to work hard on the day switching from the waggler to the method feeder and eventually on the pole line but with an overall weight of just over 96lbs it was well worth it. Field tester Andy Bailey recently fished the grand final event at Hayfield lakes in Doncaster following a series of qualifying rounds. There were 26 anglers fishing the final which was staged on Adams lakes. Drawing peg 31 on little Adams, Andy opted to fish 14.5 meters in a top four depth of water using dampened 4mm fishery feed pellets dusted with SFA 400 krill and a 6mm JPz hook pellet, feeding via a kinder pot and lifting/lowering his rig. This soon resulted in catching a few carp and the odd skimmer. The peg dried up after around two hours of steady sport, so time for a look on the waggler line which he had been pinging 8mm fishery feed pellets on from the all in. Using a Marukyu SDP2108 hard banded pellet on the business end Andy caught a few better stamp carp before revisiting the pole line due to the fish backing off. The all out was called and Andy knew he had done well on his lake, but there were talk on the bank of a few fish caught on big Adams lake which was located behind him so when the scales arrived Andy learned 122lb was the weight to beat. But after four weighs for a total of 203lb it was pretty much job done for him and the Hayfield Carpa Fantatica 2011 title was in the bag with a winners purse of a £1000. As for me well I've had a couple of weeks off from the shop and fishing and took my better half away for some rest and relaxation in the sun but i'm back now and will hopefully be picking up the odd brown envelope again soon. |

| Testing times for princess |
|
I'm not sure why but yet another young lady has secured a prototype bait! What have these young ladies got that I haven't? Please don't answer that - I already know the answers - looks and fishing ability I suppose. All joking apart the Paste Princess, Wendy Perry, was chosen to try out this new Nori paste and boy is she putting it to good use catching carp to 15lb whilst other anglers around her struggle for a bite. Watch this space for more updates on this bait as it's sure to be a winner. Meanwhile at the Glebe Roy Marlow drew a harder section this week but still managed a section win. I'm about to give away one of Roy’s winter tips and probably put my sponsorship under threat but here goes anyway; Roy has been putting liquid krill on his casters to great effect and using these both for feed and the hook but also switching to JPz later in the match to keep the fish coming. Gordon Parker continues to take everyone’s money who dares to fish against him with another win at Kingsland Res near Peterboro. Gordon fished two lines this time - the method on one line and a 5mtr pole line the other. Time to pass Gordons method mix onto us mere mortals - 80% EFG150 and 20% EFG101 - and his pole line was fished with corn soaked in SFA430 and 6mm JPz's over 3mm protein pellet's also soaked in SFA 430. The second round of the Mallory winter league on the Glebe showed just why Chris Allen is a much respected angler with yet another fine performance. Chris fished three lines during the match: bread and EFG131 mixed 50\50 through the feeder with a 10mm punch of bread on the hook, a pole line at 13m in open water where he fished over 3mm Nori pellets with JPz on the hook, and a third line a 13m pole line up the edge to fish the ever faithful krilled maggots and EFG131 combo. The match went well with seven carp on the feeder in the first two hours of the match, four on the open water pole line in the next hour and 12 out of the edge in the final 2 1\2 hours to win the lake with 123lb - top weight on the day. Robbie Griffiths first round of the local winter league at Springlea fishery went well but then again we would expect nothing less from him. Seven teams took to the banks and Robbie drew peg 37 on the Orfe Pool which was a fairly average peg for the section - the end pegs were expected to do the damage. Fishing JPz and maggots over dead krilled maggots on two different lines, he ended the match with over 21lb of Ide and 37lb of carp leaving him with a section winning and overall match winning weight of 58-14-0. Second in the match weighed 50lb with third weighed 41lb. His team Maver Total Angling team also took first place on the day with all anglers third in section or better, many of them catching on JPz. Glen Greasley continues to impress with four pick ups in the last four matches with three seconds and a section win fishing 4mm expanders over two balls of EFG130. New field tester Robin Driscoll showed just why he was signed up with a great performance on the Snake Lake at Lake John. Robin used EFG131 and krilled maggot fed little and often with krilled maggot or JPz on the hook for a weight of 40lb more than doubling second places weight of 19lb - the peg to his left even blanked. Sounds as if Robin could prove to be a useful addition to what is now becoming a very formidable line up. Ben Emery had what can only be described as an average draw this week at Ockley in Surrey and still came away with second place. Ben started up in the water on the pellet wag and later switched to the method over the top for 65lb 8oz. Ben’s method mix was made up of EFG131 and EFG120 with krilled maggot or JPz as hook bait. This week I ran an open match through the shop at Burgh Apton near Norwich. It was quite a strong field in attendance including first and second places from the match that was held there last Thursday but I managed to come out on top with 136lbs for the win. JPz fished over hemp and corn on one line and krilled maggot or JPz's fished over krilled maggot and caster on the other did the trick. My good run continued this week with a third place at Field Farm Fishery in Wrentham, it can’t last surely, or can it? |
